Student Involvement
FIRE Starters are the Gender Relations Center’s peer educators who assist in developing and implementing programs for the campus community that foster dialogue on issues of identity, gender and healthy relationships. FIRE Starters promote open and inclusive discussion, and encourage their peers to respect the inherent dignity and equality of every member of the Notre Dame family.

FIRE Starter Group Member position is typically one academic year appointment, but may be for one semester if a student is studying abroad during the academic year. This volunteer position  (selected through an application and interview) is typically is 2-5 hours per week,  including the mandatory Monday night all FIRE Starter meeting and small group meetings.

FIRE Starter Group Members will be assigned to one of four topical areas (Relationships & Authenticity, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity and Violence Prevention), and will work with a team of FIRE starters, under the direction of a FIRE Starter Lead, Program Assistant and an Assistant Director/Director.

Expectations

  • Represent the mission, vision and values of the GRC as a student leader
  • Function within a leadership cohort in the GRC
  • Execute the duties and responsibilities as outlined below

FIRE Starter Group Members will:

  • Attend  the all-student leader retreat at the beginning of each semester
  • Develop, implement, and support programs and initiatives on behalf of the GRC


Each FIRE Starter Group Member will have responsibilities in two primary areas: FIRE Starter Leadership Programs and Initiatives, and overall GRC programs and initiatives.

FIRE Starter Leadership Programs and Initiatives

  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will be assigned to one of the four FIRE Starter groups (Relationships & Authenticity, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity and Violence Prevention)
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will be responsible for meeting with their FIRE Starter Group, including the LEAD and Program Assistant weekly
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend all of the group’s events throughout the semester
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend the mandatory all-FIRE Starter meetings on Mondays @ 9pm
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend the all-student leader retreat at the beginning of each semester

GRC Programs and Initiatives  

  • Each FIRE Starter Group Member will assist with two major GRC events of their choice
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Members will assist as needed for awareness campaigns for the GRC, such as, Activities Night, Wellness Expo, Admitted Student Days, etc.
  • Each FIRE Starter Group Members will assist with the FIRE Starter Recruitment Process.
  • Deliver and hang informational/marketing materials to the residence halls and academic buildings at the discretion of the GRC full-time staff for Fire Starter Programs
  • All of the duties and responsibilities will be designed and assigned at the discretion of the FIRE Starter LEAD, Program Assistant, and Assistant Director/Director.

FIRE Starter Group Descriptions

  • Gender Identity - examines how human beings, created in the image & likeness of God, form their masculinity & femininity through roles, cultural expectations & personal experiences 
  • Relationships & Authenticity- explores the various relationships within our lives & promotes ways to develop healthy & safe connections with others (peers, friends, roommates, dating interest, to name a few) while being true to our authentic, holistic selves
  • Sexual Identity - explores how sexuality & its different elements form our identity & inform our connection to God, others & the world
  • Violence Prevention Initiatives - creates awareness about how sexual assault & relationship violence occurs within our culture, as well as promotes prevention strategies to encourage each of us to be "our brothers' and sisters' keepers"
