FIRE Starters are the Gender Relations Center’s peer educators who assist in developing and implementing programs for the campus community that foster dialogue on issues of identity, gender and healthy relationships. FIRE Starters promote open and inclusive discussion, and encourage their peers to respect the inherent dignity and equality of every member of the Notre Dame family.
FIRE Starters are peer educators and student leaders who help the GRC plan programs. The time commitment is typically 2-5 hours per week including one meeting per week. Each FIRE Starter group is led by a paid student Program Assistant and/or a paid Senior Fellow.
Expectations
Represent the mission, vision and values of the GRC as a student leader
Function within a leadership cohort in the GRC
Execute the duties and responsibilities as outlined below
FIRE Starter Group Members will:
Attend the all-student leader retreat at the beginning of each semester
Develop, implement, and support programs and initiatives on behalf of the GRC
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will have responsibilities in two primary areas: FIRE Starter Leadership Programs and Initiatives, and overall GRC programs and initiatives.
FIRE Starter Leadership Programs and Initiatives
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will be assigned to one of the four FIRE Starter groups (Relationships & Authenticity, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity & Intersectionality, and Violence Prevention)
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will be responsible for meeting with their FIRE Starter Group, including the LEAD and Program Assistant weekly
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend all of the group’s events throughout the semester
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend the mandatory all-FIRE Starter meetings on Mondays at 9:00pm
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will attend the all-student leader retreat at the beginning of each semester
GRC Programs and Initiatives
Each FIRE Starter Group Member will assist with two major GRC events of their choice
Each FIRE Starter Group Members will assist as needed for awareness campaigns for the GRC, such as, Activities Night, Wellness Expo, Admitted Student Days, etc.
Each FIRE Starter Group Members will assist with the FIRE Starter Recruitment Process.
Deliver and hang informational/marketing materials to the residence halls and academic buildings at the discretion of the GRC full-time staff for Fire Starter Programs
All of the duties and responsibilities will be designed and assigned at the discretion of the FIRE Starter LEAD, Program Assistant, and Assistant Director/Director.
